Most first visits fail by stacking too many park faces: granite harbour, Southern Ocean dunes, and a locked wilderness bay. Pick Stamford Hill. Leave the rest for a second day or a second trip.
Port Lincoln is the last town. Sleep there. Pay vehicle entry. Climb in the morning. Sit on Boston Bay granite. That is a complete first visit. Adelaide is about eight hours away — not a same-day add-on.
Unofficial planning from Parks SA, re-checked 13 Sep 2026. We have not walked this for this guide. VERIFY fees, alerts and CFS the morning you go.
The first-day shape

Granite coast

Main entrance via Proper Bay Road (~13 km). Stamford Hill car park near checkpoint 7. Monument. Return the same way. Beach at Stamford or Surfleet if heat allows. Optional 2.7 km coastal link only if water and mood survive.
That is a complete first visit. You do not owe the map a second peninsula. Donington is tomorrow’s sealed-road full day if this felt easy.
Fees, water, dogs, fire
Vehicle entry is one product. Camping is another. Memory Cove camping is a third tariff. Snapshot: vehicle $14.40; camping from $23.10; Memory Cove camping $34.10 — VERIFY live. Passes cover vehicle entry only.
Parks SA: no drinking water in the park. Bring it. Memory Cove camp water is non-potable. Feral bees at water, especially spring–autumn.
Dogs: assistance dogs only. Fire: closed Catastrophic; may close Extreme. Wood collection banned. Surfleet: no campfires.
What not to add
Memory Cove without a booking. Wanna dunes in a hire sedan. Investigator Trail “just a bit of it” at 3 pm. Those are how first days become overdue parties.
The western Sleaford entrance is blocked by a mobile dune on the 13 Sep 2026 snapshot. First-timers should not be on that problem at all.
Who should wait for a second trip
4WD dune days: only with recovery kit, a live alert check, and a booked camp if you are overnighting.
Memory Cove: only with a 15-vehicle booking, $50 cash key deposit, VIC hours verified, and 4WD when required.
Investigator linked treks (30.7 / 36 / 26.3 km sections): navigation and water required. Not a lookout shuffle.
Kids, heat, reverse clock
Stamford Hill is a steady incline, not a flat boardwalk. Fit kids with water and hats can succeed. Toddlers and midday January heat are a poor mix. Turn around anytime — the picnic area still counts.
Agree a leave-the-park time before you climb. Port Lincoln dinner is the reward. A dusk Proper Bay Road with empty bottles is not.
Where this sits in a two-day stay
Day 0: arrive Port Lincoln, fuel, water, pay vehicle entry, screenshot alerts. Day 1: this article. Day 2: Donington Loop or a booked camp — not both plus Wanna.

FAQ
Tap a question to expand the answer.
Is there a day-walk permit?
No general day-walk permit. Vehicle entry (or pass) and park rules. Memory Cove is a separate access cap.
Kids?
Stamford Hill is a steady incline, not a flat boardwalk. Fit kids with water and hats. Skip the 14 km dune hike.
Can we see Memory Cove from Stamford Hill?
No. Different bay, different access, different booking. The monument looks over Boston Bay and islands — not a substitute for the locked wilderness cove.
Do we need 4WD for a first visit?
No. Stamford Hill and Donington are sealed-road products. 4WD is for Wanna dunes and, at times, Memory Cove.
