Memory Cove

The failure in the title is treating Memory Cove like Stamford Hill. It is a Wilderness Protection Area with a locked gate. Parks SA: access limited to 15 vehicles a day. Book vehicle entry and camping, then collect a key from the Port Lincoln Visitor Information Centre.
White sand is the postcard. Logistics are the product. If the booking is full, the cove does not exist for you this week. Stamford Hill still does.
This article is unofficial orientation from Parks SA pages re-checked 13 Sep 2026. We have not walked Memory Cove for this guide. VERIFY live fees, hours and the 15-vehicle cap. This site does not publish government email addresses.
The cap is not a walking permit
Lincoln National Park day walks do not need a Memory Cove key. The 15-vehicle limit is an access control for the wilderness area. Do not conflate it with a Stamford Hill permit — there isn’t one.
Official Memory Cove page: ~50 km from Port Lincoln; Wanna access gate about 19 km from the cove; 4WD required at times; five campsites; toilets and non-potable water. Pack out rubbish.
A multi-park pass can cover vehicle entry into Lincoln including Memory Cove. You still book the access/camping product, collect the key, and pay camping if you stay. Camping is not included in the pass.
Fees split (VERIFY live)
Snapshot 13 Sep 2026: Lincoln / Memory Cove vehicle entry $14.40 per vehicle. Memory Cove camping $34.10 per night — not the park “from $23.10” general camping figure. Fees must be paid before entry.
Key deposit listed $50 cash on the official Memory Cove fees tab. That is a deposit, not a third park fee you get to skip. VERIFY the live amount and whether your booking confirmation repeats it.
The free coastal vehicle-entry promotion ended 6 April 2026. Do not arrive quoting a 2025 news story.
Key pickup

Port Lincoln Visitor Information Centre, 60 Tasman Terrace. Follow the instructions on your booking. Official Memory Cove fees tab (re-checked 13 Sep 2026): $50 cash deposit; arrange pickup in business hours on (08) 8683 3544.
General VIC line on the Lincoln park page is 1300 788 378. VERIFY hours live before you leave a distant bed. If VIC is closed, you do not have a Memory Cove day — you have a Stamford day.
Return the key as instructed. Do not invent a drop box, a neighbour, or “we’ll bring it Monday.”
The road after the key
4WD required at times. Caravans not permitted. About 19 km from the Wanna access gate in Lincoln National Park to the cove. Do not let a second vehicle tailgate you through the locked gate.
Self-sufficient from the gate: no kiosk, no bins, no signal as a plan. 000 needs reception. Emergency+; offline maps; optional PLB. We do not invent carrier coverage maps.
No fires. No generators. Marine mammals: legal distances. Swim only if conditions and ability match — this is not a patrolled beach.
Plan B if the cap is full
Stamford Hill plus a Boston Bay beach is the competent save. Donington Loop is the sealed-road full day. Neither needs a wilderness key.
Do not wait at the locked gate. Do not ask a stranger to let you through. Do not walk in as a loophole unless Parks SA’s live rules explicitly allow what you are doing — we do not invent one.
Failure modes
Photo on social + sedan + no booking = locked gate. Fix: book days ahead or skip.
Key hours assumed from a blog = closed VIC. Fix: phone (08) 8683 3544 the day before.
Campfire at Memory Cove = you booked the wrong camp. Fix: read the no-fires line before you pack wood you cannot legally burn.
FAQ
Tap a question to expand the answer.
Does a park pass get me through the Memory Cove gate?
A 2-month or 12-month multi-park pass can cover vehicle entry into Lincoln including Memory Cove. You still book the access/camping product, collect the key, and pay camping if you stay. Camping is not included in the pass.
Can I walk in without a vehicle booking?
Do not invent a walk-in loophole. Follow the live Parks SA booking rules for the wilderness area.
Is Memory Cove the same as Stamford Beach?
No. Stamford Beach is a Boston Bay day area on sealed roads. Memory Cove is a locked wilderness bay with a 15-vehicle cap and a key.
What if I only want a day visit, not camping?
You still book the vehicle-access product inside the 15-vehicle cap and collect the key. Day visitors still return the key as instructed and leave with daylight.
Can I take a caravan if I leave it at the gate?
Official: caravans not permitted for Memory Cove access. Do not invent a workaround. Use a booked Lincoln campground that allows what you actually drive.
