Sleaford entrance blocked: the dune-track Plan B
Parks SA (checked 13 Sep 2026): western Sleaford entrance/exit of the Sleaford–Wanna 4WD track is blocked by a mobile sand dune. Use the main entrance. Plan B if you aimed at the west gate.

The failure in the title is driving to the western (Sleaford) entrance because last year’s track notes said you could. Parks SA’s live park-page banner (checked 13 Sep 2026): a mobile sand dune has blocked that entrance/exit and it is impassable. Use the main entrance to enter and exit.
Parks SA last updated that alert on 10 March 2026. It was still showing on 26 August 2026. Mobile dunes do not keep office hours. A screenshot from Easter is not a morning briefing.
This is a dated snapshot, not live. Recheck the official alert the morning you go. This article is unofficial orientation for groups who aimed at the west gate and need a competent Plan B.
What the alert actually says

Official wording (parks.sa.gov.au Lincoln National Park, 13 Sep 2026): WESTERN (SLEAFORD) ENTRANCE/EXIT: The Western (Sleaford) entrance/exit of the ‘Sleaford Wanna’ 4WD track has been blocked by a mobile sand dune and is impassable. Please use main entrance to enter and exit the park.
Details page: Parks SA know-before-you-go closures — Lincoln National Park alert (last updated 10 March 2026 on that snapshot). We quote it because blogs still draw a through-line on the west side. We do not upgrade it to live status.
“Impassable” is not “maybe with a snorkel.” Do not scout the dune face. Do not winch on vegetation. Turn around and use Proper Bay Road.
Main entrance is the whole product right now
Proper Bay Road from Port Lincoln is about 13 km to the main park entrance. Pay vehicle entry before you rely on the gate. All first-visit walks (Stamford Hill, Donington, September Beach) use this entrance.
If your old PDF showed a Sleaford west start for Wanna lookouts, rewrite the day: enter main, then the red-marker track from inside the park if the live alert still allows it. Exit the same way.
Whale lookouts at Wanna and Lone Pine sit on this coast. They inherit the same entrance rule. A May–October whale plan is not a licence to force the west gate.
Is the whole dune track closed?
The official banner names the western Sleaford entrance/exit. It instructs you to use the main entrance. It does not automatically mean every red marker inside the park is gone.
That distinction matters, and it is also how people talk themselves into a closed gate. Check the live alert. If you cannot confirm the interior track is open, do not guess. Sealed-road days still exist.
Parks SA: getting bogged in sand is common. Carry a shovel, deflate for sand, stay on designated tracks, watch tides. Recovery gear you have never used is decoration.
Plan B if you are not 4WD-ready
Do Stamford Hill. Do Donington Loop. Book September Beach. Save Wanna dunes for a trip with high-clearance 4WD, recovery kit and a confirmed open track.
A sedan on a sand dune is how holidays become winch stories. Hire-car contracts often forbid sand. That is not this site’s legal advice — it is a reason to pick granite harbour instead.
If you already drove to the west gate and met the dune: do not wait for it to move. Drive to Port Lincoln, reset, main entrance, Stamford. The monument still counts.
Camping and the blocked gate
A booked 4WD campground does not reopen Sleaford west. You still enter and exit via the main entrance on this snapshot. Memory Cove is a different locked gate, a different booking, a different key — do not conflate them.
Wood collection is banned. Surfleet has no campfires. Generators 9am–9pm where permitted. Closed Catastrophic; may close Extreme. None of that is optional because you “came for the dunes.”
Failure modes
Old blog + west gate + dune = wasted morning. Fix: main entrance from the start.
“We’ll just look” at an impassable entrance = vegetation damage and a stuck vehicle. Fix: turn around at the first official closed indication.
Stacking Investigator after a bog recovery = injury. Fix: one hard problem per day.
FAQ

Is the whole dune track closed?
The official banner names the western Sleaford entrance/exit as impassable. It instructs you to use the main entrance. It does not automatically mean every red marker inside the park is gone — check the live alert and do not guess.
Can I wait for the dune to move?
Mobile dunes move on their schedule, not yours. Plan the main entrance. If the track is closed when you arrive, switch to a sealed-road walk.
Does this affect Stamford Hill?
No. Stamford Hill and Donington use the main Proper Bay Road entrance. The west-gate problem is a Wanna / Sleaford-track problem.
Can I still see whales from Wanna?
Maybe — May–October, not guaranteed, and only if you can reach the lookouts via the main entrance and any open interior track. VERIFY the live alert. Lookouts are not a reason to force Sleaford west.
