Parks SA: each year between May and October you may spot southern right whales swimming off the Sleaford Bay coastline in Thorny Passage Marine Park. The most accessible spotting is from Wanna and Lone Pine lookouts. “May” is not “will”.

This is a lookout product with legal distances, wind, and a 4WD access problem attached. It is not a swim, not a drone brief, and not a reason to force the blocked western Sleaford entrance.

Unofficial notes. We have not stood those lookouts for this guide. VERIFY the live Sleaford–Wanna alert, fire ratings and marine-mammal rules before you go.

How to watch without wrecking the day

Binoculars. Patience. Stay on named lookouts. Share space. A blank ocean still counts if you protected the group and the reverse clock.

Swimmers: no closer than 30 m, and rips make swimming dangerous here anyway. Use lookouts. Vessel rules are stricter if you are on the water — read the marine mammal regulations, do not copy a social post.

Licensed boat tours from Port Lincoln are optional after this plan, never required, never a substitute for Parks SA rules. Park fees are never affiliated.

Access and the dune alert

Wanna lookouts sit on the Southern Ocean side. 4WD and the Sleaford–Wanna alert apply. Snapshot 13 Sep 2026: western Sleaford entrance blocked by a mobile dune. Main park entrance via Proper Bay Road.

Pay vehicle entry. If you are in a sedan, this article becomes Stamford Hill plus a Boston Bay beach. Do not test sand “a little bit.”

Whale season does not pause fire ratings. Closed Catastrophic; may close Extreme.

Thorny Passage is not a fishing how-to

Sleaford Bay sits in Thorny Passage Marine Park. Sanctuary zoning affects fishing methods — shore-based rec fishing only for other methods in the named sanctuary (Wreck Beach to Wanna Lookout) on official notes. Check PIRSA. We do not publish bag limits.

Whale watching does not grant a fishing exemption. If you came to fish, that is a different checklist.

Plan B if the ocean is empty

Stamford Hill plus beach. Donington Loop if you still have a full sealed-road day. A null sighting is not a failed Lincoln day.

Do not invent a longer dune hike, a cliff scramble, or a drone pass to “make it worth it.”

Failure modes

July expectation of guaranteed whales. Fix: official verb is “may.”

West-gate approach in whale season. Fix: main entrance; read the blocked-entrance article.

Closer-to-the-cliff photo. Fix: legal distance beats the shot.

FAQ

Tap a question to expand the answer.

Are whales guaranteed in July?

No. Official language is “you may spot”. Plan a park day that still works if the ocean is empty.

Can I swim out for a closer look?

Swimmers: no closer than 30 m, and rips make swimming dangerous here anyway. Use lookouts.

Do I need 4WD?

Lookout roads may need 4WD. If you cannot honestly say yes, run the Stamford half-day instead. VERIFY the live Sleaford–Wanna alert.

Can I fly a drone?

Marine mammals have legal buffers (generally 300 m) plus CASA rules. This article is lookouts on land. Do not fly from a hope and a phone app.
