Full-day Cape Donington
Guide updated · verify Parks SA the morning you go
Donington Loop (6.2 km / ~2 hr) plus September Beach time. Optional 1 km lighthouse–beach link. Vehicle entry paid. Camping only if you booked September Beach.

This is the sealed-road full day — peninsula granite, lighthouse precinct and a Boston Bay beach with a proper lunch. Islands and sea-lions are a look from shore (legal distances), not a landing. Memory Cove is a different booking and a different road.
Start from Port Lincoln with vehicle entry already paid. Snapshot 13 Sep 2026: $14.40 per vehicle — VERIFY live. If you want September Beach camping, that is a second product (camping from $23.10 on the park page — VERIFY per site) booked on parks.sa.gov.au. Do not arrive hoping.
The 6.2 km Donington Loop is a real two-hour walk for many adults, plus photos, heat and granite glare. The 1 km Cape Donington–September Beach link is the family shortcut, not a substitute for honesty about the loop. Stacking Investigator “because we’re already on the peninsula” is how groups finish Proper Bay Road in the dark.
Donington Cottage (Kata and Belle) is official Parks SA accommodation, listed $114/night with a 2-night minimum on the snapshot of 13 Sep 2026 — VERIFY live. It is not an affiliated stay on this site and it is not a walk-up.
Planning from Parks SA. Not walked for this guide. Check alerts, fire ratings and swim conditions the morning you go.
Track status, bookings, vehicle-entry fees, the Sleaford–Wanna dune alert and weather change — verify on Parks SA before you leave, then use the timeline below as a planning skeleton only. A paid vehicle permit does not mean empty car parks, an open western dune entrance, or walk-up Memory Cove.

Timeline
Night before
Port Lincoln base and the day’s contract
Pay vehicle entry. If you want September Beach camping, confirm the booking — do not arrive hoping. Agree: primary = Donington Loop (or the 1 km family link if that is the honest grade). Optional = beach time. Off the table = Wanna dunes, Memory Cove, Investigator treks.
Morning leave
Main entrance to the peninsula
Fuel and water in Port Lincoln. Main entrance via Proper Bay Road. Screenshot Parks SA alerts on town Wi-Fi. Do not detour to the western Sleaford gate “to see the dunes on the way.”
Morning walk
Donington Loop (checkpoint 15 or 16)
6.2 km, about 2 hours for many fit adults plus buffers. Granite, lighthouse precinct, wind. Stay on the formed walk. Turn around if heat or blisters win — the 1 km lighthouse–September Beach link is the legitimate shrink, not a failure.
Midday
Beach, shade and bees
September Beach or a signed day area. Water, hat, covered drinks — feral bees at water, especially spring–autumn. Swim only if conditions are honest; rips exist even on a blue Boston Bay day. Eat before anyone is hangry.
Afternoon
Optional 1 km link or look, then exit
Cape Donington to September Beach is about 30 minutes on the family link if you skipped it this morning. Then exit via the main entrance with daylight margin. Sea-lions on Donington Island: watch from shore, legal distances, no landing from this itinerary.
Late afternoon
Hard turn toward Port Lincoln
Do not “just check Memory Cove’s gate” on the way home. Do not start a 14 km dune hike. Town dinner is the reward. If you are camping at September Beach, you already booked — set up, water, no wood collection.
Evening
Camp quiet or town reset
Campers: generators only where and when permitted (never at Memory Cove; this is not Memory Cove). Surfleet has no campfires. Town stayers: showers and an honest note — if the loop felt hard, tomorrow is a beach or rest day, not Investigator.

Parking & access tips
- Lighthouse and campground parks only — not beach sand in a sedan.
- Do not drive onto beaches. Do not block campground loops.
- Main entrance in and out. Ignore the blocked western Sleaford rumour as a shortcut.
- If September Beach camping, park as signed for your booked site — two cars of friends is not extra entitlement.
- Sea-lion viewing is from shore. Do not invent a boat landing from this page.
Skip if short on time / energy
- Wanna dune track as a “sunset extra”
- Investigator 10-hour section after the loop
- Memory Cove without a booking and key
- Unbooked September Beach camping
- Donington Cottage walk-up (2-night min, official only — VERIFY)
- Same-day Adelaide return after the loop
Extra tips
Who this plan is for
- Sedan / 2WD groups who want a full day without 4WD
- Walkers who can honestly do ~2 hours on granite, or will take the 1 km family link
- Campers who already hold a September Beach booking
- Second-day visitors after a Stamford Hill half-day
Decision gates (say them out loud)
- If the loop is too much at the first lookout: switch to the 1 km link + beach
- If Extreme / Catastrophic fire ratings: verify park open status before you leave town
- If someone wants Memory Cove at lunch: that booking was yesterday’s job — not today’s impulse
- If bees or heat empty the tank: shade and exit beat a second walk
What success looks like
- Loop or family link completed without a dusk highway
- One beach block, not three extra headlands
- Sea-lions watched from a legal distance or not at all — never approached
- Camping only in a booked site, vehicle entry already paid
Next trip upgrade
- Overnight camp + dune coast only with 4WD and a live Sleaford alert check
- Memory Cove day if you can book the 15-vehicle cap and collect a key
- Leave Investigator treks for a dedicated, self-sufficient trip
