Half-day Stamford Hill and beach
Guide updated · verify Parks SA the morning you go
Sleep in Port Lincoln. Pay vehicle entry. Climb Stamford Hill (1.6 km return, ~45 min), then Stamford Beach or Surfleet Cove. Do not add Memory Cove or the dune track.

Port Lincoln is a town day with a national park attached. Success is one outdoor block plus a swim-or-sit on Boston Bay granite — not dunes plus a locked gate plus a second peninsula “because the weather is nice.”
Adelaide is about eight hours away. A same-day capital return is a different, usually worse, sport. This plan assumes you already slept in Port Lincoln (or nearby). If you are still on the highway at 10 am, shrink to town time and try Stamford tomorrow.
Vehicle entry is a separate fee system from camping. Snapshot 13 Sep 2026: $14.40 per vehicle on the park page — VERIFY live on Parks SA. A multi-park pass covers vehicle entry only. It does not unlock Memory Cove, book a camp, or open the western Sleaford entrance.
Protect the afternoon by saying no early. If heat, Extreme fire danger, or a cranky group wins after the monument, the beach is optional. Hard 4WD and booked wilderness are off this plan entirely.
Planning from official sources — we have not walked this itinerary for this guide. Check Parks SA alerts and CFS the morning you go. This page is a skeleton, not live status.
Track status, bookings, vehicle-entry fees, the Sleaford–Wanna dune alert and weather change — verify on Parks SA before you leave, then use the timeline below as a planning skeleton only. A paid vehicle permit does not mean empty car parks, an open western dune entrance, or walk-up Memory Cove.

Timeline
Night before
Sleep in Port Lincoln and set the reverse clock
Not a 4 am Adelaide leave. Fill water and fuel in town. Screenshot Parks SA alerts and the CFS rating on hotel Wi-Fi. Pay vehicle entry online. Agree out loud: primary = Stamford Hill monument. Optional = Stamford Beach or Surfleet Cove only if energy and heat allow. Hard leave-the-park time so you are not inventing Wanna dunes at dusk.
Morning
Main entrance → Stamford Hill car park (checkpoint 7)
Proper Bay Road from Port Lincoln is about 13 km to the main park entrance — not the blocked western Sleaford gate. Park in the signed Stamford Hill base car park. Start the 1.6 km return climb only if the group is still honest about heat and fire ratings.
Morning block
Stamford Hill to the Flinders Monument
Moderate incline, sealed-road start, about 45 minutes return for many fit adults plus photos. Stay on the formed walk. Turn around if anyone is dizzy, the wind is wild on the exposed hill, or you are already behind the reverse clock. The monument over Boston Bay is the whole product — not a warm-up for Investigator.
Late morning
Stamford Beach or Surfleet Cove (optional)
Optional 2.7 km coastal link if legs and water still exist. Picnic at the day area. Rips still exist on Boston Bay — swim only if conditions and ability match. Do not invent a second peninsula (Donington) because the first walk felt short.
Lunch
Reset — food is strategy
Eat and hydrate before anyone is hangry. Honest mood check: happy / done / needs shade. Feral bees at water, especially spring–autumn — keep drinks covered. If done, that still counts as a Lincoln day.
Afternoon
Back in Port Lincoln before you get clever
Exit via the main entrance. Town food, showers, fuel. If energy remains, that is a town walk or a look at the marina — not Wanna dunes, not a Memory Cove enquiry at 3 pm when VIC hours may already be tight.
Evening
Debrief and decide tomorrow
Note what worked (start time, water, kids’ limits). If this felt easy, tomorrow can be Donington Loop — a different sealed-road day, not an add-on tonight. If this felt hard, you already succeeded; do not “make up for it” with 4WD.
Packing
- Water 2 L+ per adult (more in heat)
- Sun hat + high SPF — granite glare is real
- Closed shoes with grip
- Wind / sun shirt even on a “mild” Port Lincoln morning
- Snacks that survive a warm pack
- Simple first aid + blister care
- Phone offline map / Parks SA alert screenshot
- Cash/card already used for vehicle entry — do not rely on signal at the hill

Parking & access tips
- Use the signed Stamford Hill base car park — do not invent roadside parking on Proper Bay Road.
- Do not block park roads, campground loops or emergency access.
- Main entrance only. The western Sleaford entrance is a different, often blocked, sport (snapshot 13 Sep 2026 — VERIFY).
- If the hill car park is full, go to a signed Boston Bay day area — do not wait in a dangerous verge.
- Never leave bags visible in the car at trailheads.
Skip if short on time / energy
- Memory Cove key pickup “while we’re in town”
- Sleaford–Wanna 4WD as an afternoon treat
- Donington Loop “because we have time”
- Investigator Trail sections after the monument
- Same-day Adelaide return after the climb
- Leaving Port Lincoln after a late brunch and still expecting a calm half-day
Extra tips
Who this plan is for
- First-timers who already slept in Port Lincoln
- Families and mixed-fitness groups who need a high-payoff walk without 4WD
- Visitors who will protect a reverse clock back to town
- Anyone whose Memory Cove booking failed — this is the honest Plan B
Decision gates (say them out loud)
- If CFS is Catastrophic: the park is closed — do not improvise a “quick look.”
- If Extreme fire danger: Parks SA may close the park — verify before you leave town.
- If someone is already fried at the car park: skip the climb; a Boston Bay beach still counts.
- If heat wins on the hill: turn around. The monument is not compulsory.
- If the group starts naming Wanna or Memory Cove at lunch: that is tomorrow’s (or never’s) itinerary.
What success looks like
- Whole group back in Port Lincoln with energy for dinner
- One primary experience completed well — monument and/or one beach
- No invented 4WD or locked-gate logistics after lunch
- Notes for next time: Donington full day, or a booked Memory Cove, not both stacked
Next trip upgrade
- Full-day Cape Donington on sealed roads if this felt easy
- Memory Cove only with a booking, key and 4WD plan
- Read Plan your visit for the three fee systems before you add camping
