This is logistics first, white sand second. If the booking is full, do Stamford Hill. Do not tailgate a key-holder through the gate. Fifteen vehicles a day is a cap, not a suggestion.

Book vehicle entry and camping (if staying) on parks.sa.gov.au. Multi-park passes cover vehicle entry only — not camping. Snapshot 13 Sep 2026: Lincoln / Memory Cove vehicle entry $14.40; Memory Cove camping $34.10 per night — not the park “from $23.10” general camping figure. Free coastal vehicle-entry promo ended 6 April 2026. VERIFY live.

Collect the key in Port Lincoln. Official Memory Cove fees tab: $50 cash deposit; pickup in business hours on (08) 8683 3544 — VERIFY hours. Port Lincoln VIC, 60 Tasman Terrace; Lincoln park page also lists 1300 788 378. We do not print government emails. Return the key as instructed.

Wanna access gate in Lincoln National Park is about 19 km from Memory Cove. 4WD required at times; caravans not permitted. Self-sufficient: toilets and non-potable water at the five-site campground. Pack out rubbish. No fires, no generators. Legal distances from marine mammals.

Not walked for this guide. A locked gate with no key is the end of the plan, not the start of a workaround.

Track status, bookings, vehicle-entry fees, the Sleaford–Wanna dune alert and weather change — verify on Parks SA before you leave, then use the timeline below as a planning skeleton only. A paid vehicle permit does not mean empty car parks, an open western dune entrance, or walk-up Memory Cove.

Timeline

  1. Days before you travel

Book both products and diary the key hours

Vehicle entry and camping (if staying) on parks.sa.gov.au. Fifteen-vehicle cap. Screenshot the confirmation. Call or check (08) 8683 3544 for key pickup hours — VERIFY. If either booking fails, switch to the Stamford half-day plan before you leave home.

  2. Night before

    Cash deposit, 4WD kit, water

$50 cash for the official key deposit (fees tab snapshot 13 Sep 2026 — VERIFY). Pack drinking water for the whole day (and night if camping). Recovery gear you can use. No firewood fantasies — fires prohibited.

  3. Morning in Port Lincoln

    Collect the key

Port Lincoln VIC, 60 Tasman Terrace, in the hours you verified. Follow the instructions on your booking. Lincoln park page: 1300 788 378. Do not print government emails from this site. If VIC is closed, you do not have a Memory Cove day — you have a Stamford day.

  4. Late morning

    Locked gate to the bay

Main Lincoln park access then the Memory Cove road. 4WD at times. About 19 km from the Wanna access gate to the cove. Do not let a second vehicle tailgate you through. Self-sufficient from here: no kiosk, no bins, no signal as a plan.

  5. Day at the cove

White sand, legal distances, booked sites only

Day visitors: enjoy the bay and leave with daylight for key return. Campers: five sites, booked only. Toilets and non-potable water. Pack out rubbish. Marine mammals: watch, do not approach. Swim only if conditions and ability match — this is not a patrolled beach.

  6. Return

    Key back per VIC instructions

Do not invent a second park after dark. Do not “drop the key later” without following the written instructions you were given. Main Lincoln entrance for Stamford or Donington is another day’s itinerary.

  7. If the key fails

Execute Stamford Plan B the same day

Closed VIC, lost booking, or a full cap is not a reason to wait at the locked gate. Half-day Stamford Hill plus a Boston Bay beach is the competent save.

Parking & access tips

  • Booked campsites only — five sites, not overflow on the sand.
  • No caravans.
  • Do not block the locked gate. Do not tailgate another key-holder.
  • 4WD required at times — sedan in wet/rough months is a no.
  • Return the key as the VIC instructed; do not invent a drop box.

Skip if short on time / energy

  • Unbooked drop-in
  • Sedan in wet or rough months
  • Campfire evening / generator
  • Tailgating a stranger’s key
  • Same-day Adelaide return after key logistics
  • Adding Wanna dunes after a late key return

  • People who can collect and return a key in Port Lincoln business hours
  • 4WD parties who will stay self-sufficient at the cove
  • Campers who accept no fires and no generators

Fees split (VERIFY live)

  • Memory Cove camping listed $34.10 per night — not the park “from $23.10” general camping figure.

  • Free coastal vehicle-entry promo ended 6 April 2026.
  • Passes cover vehicle entry only — never camping, never the key.

Decision gates (say them out loud)

  • If the booking is not in your name/confirmation: Stamford Plan B
  • If VIC is closed or the deposit/hours fail: Stamford Plan B — do not wait at the gate
  • If the road needs 4WD you do not have: turn around
  • If someone wants a fire: they booked the wrong camp

What success looks like

  • Key out and key back as instructed
  • Bay time without crowding marine mammals or other booked sites
  • Rubbish packed out; no fire story
  • If it failed at VIC: a calm Stamford afternoon instead of a locked-gate argument
