Overnight camp and dune coast

Overnight in-park + 4WD dune dayBest for: Booked campers with high-clearance 4WD who checked the Sleaford track alert

Book a campground on parks.sa.gov.au (September, Surfleet, Taylor’s Landing, or a listed 4WD site). Next day: Sleaford–Wanna red-marker track and/or lookouts. Western Sleaford entrance blocked (snapshot 13 Sep 2026) — main entrance only.

This is two products stacked on purpose: a booked camp, then a 4WD coast day. It is not a sedan afternoon from Stamford Hill and it is not Memory Cove (different wilderness booking, different key).

Camping fees are separate from vehicle entry. Snapshot 13 Sep 2026: vehicle $14.40; camping from $23.10/night on the park page — VERIFY per campground. Wood collection is banned. Surfleet: no campfires. Generators 9am–9pm where permitted; never at Memory Cove.

Parks SA: getting bogged in sand is common. Deflate, shovel, stay on the red-marker track, check tides. The western (Sleaford) entrance/exit of the Sleaford–Wanna 4WD track is blocked by a mobile sand dune — Parks SA last updated that alert 10 March 2026, still showing 13 Sep 2026. Use the main Proper Bay Road entrance. VERIFY live before you leave town.

Carry all drinking water. Mobile coverage is not a plan: 000 needs reception; Emergency+; offline maps. Optional sat messenger is kit, not a promise of coverage. We do not invent carrier maps.

Not walked for this guide. If you are not 4WD-confident, book a sealed-road camp (September, Surfleet, Taylor’s Landing) and treat Wanna lookouts as a verify-first extra — or skip dunes entirely and use the Donington full-day plan instead.

Track status, bookings, vehicle-entry fees, the Sleaford–Wanna dune alert and weather change — verify on Parks SA before you leave, then use the timeline below as a planning skeleton only. A paid vehicle permit does not mean empty car parks, an open western dune entrance, or walk-up Memory Cove.

Timeline

  1. Before you leave home

Book camping + vehicle entry as two products

Official bookings only on parks.sa.gov.au. Passes do not include camping. Screenshot the Sleaford–Wanna alert and CFS rating. Pack recovery gear you actually know how to use. If the 15-vehicle Memory Cove product is what you wanted, that is a different itinerary.

  2. Travel day morning

    Port Lincoln last-town reset

Fuel, water containers, food, cash if you still need anything the bush will not sell. Confirm the dune alert on town Wi-Fi. If the track is closed or you are in a 2WD, switch now to a sealed-road camp day — do not “see how the sand looks.”

  3. Day 1 afternoon

    Camp set-up

Main entrance. Sealed-road camps if you are not 4WD-confident. Stay in the booked site. Carry all drinking water. Do not camp under overhanging limbs. Pack out rubbish — no bins. Wood collection is banned park-wide.

  4. Day 1 evening

Fire rules and an early night

Closed Catastrophic; may close Extreme — CFS. Wood / solid-fuel fires prohibited in fire danger season (usually 1 November–15 April) and at all times at Surfleet. Generators only 9am–9pm where permitted. Roads at dusk: wildlife. Do not night-drive the dune track for fun.

  5. Day 2 morning

Dune track or lookouts — red markers

Main entrance in and out while Sleaford west is blocked. Wanna and Lone Pine lookouts if whales are in season (May–October, not guaranteed). Stay on the marked track. Deflate for sand; carry a shovel. Getting bogged is common — that is the official warning, not folklore.

  6. Day 2 optional

Wanna–Sleaford Mere hike only if fit and early

14.3 km is a full walking day, not a lookout shuffle. Only if the group named it last night, water is real, and fire ratings allow. Never impulse-add after a chaotic bog recovery.

  7. Day 2 exit

    Pack down with daylight

Leave the track and the park with margin. Reinflate tyres before sealed-road speeds. Town dump/water as facilities allow — do not invent a creek fill. If the dune day failed, Stamford Hill tomorrow still counts.

Packing

  • Drinking water — all of it, not a “top up later”
  • 4WD shovel you will actually use
  • Tyre deflator / 12 V compressor
  • Offline maps (Avenza or equivalent)
  • Recovery boards if you know how to use them
  • Warm layer for dune wind after hot sand
  • Headlamp
  • Emergency+ installed; consider a PLB if you travel remote
  • Rubbish bags — pack out
  • Simple first aid + blister care

Parking & access tips

  • Stay in booked sites only. Friends’ “extra tent on the edge” is not a site.
  • Do not camp under overhanging limbs.
  • Pack out rubbish — no bins.
  • Main Proper Bay Road entrance while Sleaford west is blocked (VERIFY live).
  • Reinflate before highway speeds after sand.
  • Never park on vegetation or block the red-marker track.

Skip if short on time / energy

  • Sedan-only holiday expecting dune access
  • Unbooked “we’ll find a beach”
  • Memory Cove without a key and 15-vehicle booking
  • Night driving the dune track
  • Wood collection / Surfleet campfire
  • Investigator trek stacked after a bogged morning

Extra tips

Who this plan is for

  • Licensed, practised high-clearance 4WD drivers
  • Groups who already hold a camping booking
  • Visitors who will read the live Sleaford–Wanna alert, not a screenshot from last year
  • People who will carry all water and recovery gear

Decision gates (say them out loud)

  • If the western entrance is still blocked: main entrance only — do not force Sleaford west
  • If CFS is Catastrophic or the park may close on Extreme: stay in town
  • If you bog and recovery is messy: lookouts are over; exit with daylight
  • If anyone is 2WD-only: sealed-road camp, no dune track

Fire rules (VERIFY live)

  • Closed on Catastrophic Fire Danger; may close on Extreme — CFS.
  • Wood / solid-fuel fires prohibited in fire danger season (usually 1 November–15 April) and at all times at Surfleet.
  • Generators 9am–9pm where permitted; never at Memory Cove.
  • Wood collection is banned.

What success looks like

  • Booked camp, paid vehicle entry, everyone out with the vehicle intact
  • Dune time on the marked track or an honest skip
  • No Memory Cove gate-tailgating
  • Notes: whether Wanna lookouts were enough without the 14 km hike
