Whale-season lookouts (May–October)

Half to full day in whale seasonBest for: May–October visitors who want southern right whales from Wanna and Lone Pine — not a guaranteed sighting

Parks SA: each year between May and October you may spot southern right whales off the Sleaford Bay coastline in Thorny Passage Marine Park. Most accessible spotting is from Wanna and Lone Pine lookouts. Bring optics, patience and a 4WD plan if the lookout roads need it.

Whales are wild. This itinerary is land lookouts plus legal distances — not a swim, not a drone product, not a guaranteed sighting. Planes and drones have legal buffers; stay on named lookouts unless you booked a licensed vessel tour (optional, never required for a Lincoln day).

Parks SA names Wanna and Lone Pine as the practical spotting points for southern right whales off Sleaford Bay (Thorny Passage Marine Park). Possible, not promised. A blank ocean still counts if you protected the group and the reverse clock.

Dune-track access still applies. Snapshot 13 Sep 2026: western Sleaford entrance blocked by a mobile dune — main Proper Bay Road entrance only. VERIFY live. If you are in a sedan or the 4WD track is closed, this plan becomes a Port Lincoln / sealed-road day (Stamford Hill + beach). Do not force the dunes for a maybe-whale.

Vehicle entry $14.40 snapshot 13 Sep 2026 — VERIFY. Sanctuary zoning in Thorny Passage Marine Park is a fishing-rules problem, not a whale-watching permit. We do not publish bag limits; check PIRSA if you also planned to fish.

Not walked for this guide. Optics, wind layers and patience beat a closer-to-the-cliff photo.

Track status, bookings, vehicle-entry fees, the Sleaford–Wanna dune alert and weather change — verify on Parks SA before you leave, then use the timeline below as a planning skeleton only. A paid vehicle permit does not mean empty car parks, an open western dune entrance, or walk-up Memory Cove.

Timeline

  1. Before you go

Season, fire rating and the dune alert

May–October window is official. Confirm CFS and the Sleaford–Wanna alert on town Wi-Fi. Pay vehicle entry. If 4WD is not honest today, pre-name Plan B: Stamford Hill + Boston Bay beach.

  2. Morning leave

    Port Lincoln → main entrance

Fuel, water, layers. Main entrance only while Sleaford west is blocked. Do not add a Memory Cove key stop “in case.”

  3. Morning–midday

    Wanna and Lone Pine lookouts

Allow time. Stay behind safe ground — do not walk toward cliff edges for a closer whale. Legal distances from marine mammals. If the 4WD track is closed or you are in a sedan, execute Plan B immediately.

  4. If no whales

    Plan B still counts

Stamford Hill plus beach, or Donington Loop if you still have a full day and sealed-road energy. A blank ocean is not a failed park day. Do not invent a drone pass or a scramble down the dune face.

  5. Lunch

    Wind, water, bees

Eat in a signed day area or back in the vehicle out of the southerly. Covered drinks. If the group is cold and disappointed, town time is competence.

  6. Afternoon exit

    Daylight margin

Reinflate if you aired down. Main entrance out. Optional licensed boat tour is a Port Lincoln product on another booking — not an impulse add after a long 4WD morning.

  • Water + sun even in May–October glare
  • Warm mid-layer
  • Closed shoes with grip

Parking & access tips

  • Use signed lookout parks only.
  • Do not walk toward cliff edges for a closer whale.
  • Main entrance while Sleaford west is blocked (VERIFY).
  • Sedan = Plan B sealed-road day. Do not test sand “a little bit.”
  • Never fly a drone at whales from this itinerary.

Skip if short on time / energy

  • Guaranteed whales
  • Drone buzzing
  • Memory Cove without a booking
  • Forcing the dune track in a 2WD
  • Cliff-edge scramble for a photo
  • Stacking Investigator after a null sighting

Extra tips

Who this plan is for

  • May–October visitors who accept “may” as the official verb
  • People with optics and patience
  • 4WD groups who will abort to Stamford if the track is closed
  • Anyone happy if the ocean stays empty and the day still counts

Decision gates (say them out loud)

  • If it is not May–October: do not run this plan — use Stamford or Donington
  • If the dune alert or 2WD makes lookouts unreachable: Plan B immediately
  • If whales appear: stay at lookout distance; do not climb down
  • If no whales by lunch and the group is cold: town or Stamford, not a longer track

What success looks like

  • Legal, unhurried lookout time — with or without whales
  • No cliff-edge or drone story to regret
  • Vehicle and people back in Port Lincoln intact
  • A note on whether a licensed boat tour is worth a future booking

Next trip upgrade

  • Overnight camp + dunes if 4WD and bookings are real
  • Half-day Stamford if this was your first Lincoln morning
  • Optional tours hub for licensed vessels — never instead of Parks SA rules
