Peninsula day, not a dune day

Cape Donington sits at the northern tip of the Jussieu Peninsula. Parks SA’s Donington Loop (6.2 km, about 2 hours) uses granite outcrops, sandy beaches and offshore-island views. Australian sea-lions and long-nosed fur-seals haul out on Donington Island near the lighthouse — watch from a distance.

This is still Boston Bay / granite country, not the Southern Ocean dune track. Sealed access from the main entrance. If you wanted Wanna or Memory Cove, that is a different vehicle class and a different booking.

A honest full day is the loop or the 1 km family link plus beach time at September — not Donington plus Sleaford–Wanna because the peninsula felt easy.

Walks that actually start here

Donington Loop: 6.2 km / ~2 hours from the lighthouse (checkpoint 15) or September Beach campground (checkpoint 16). Moderate. Islands, granite, sand.

Cape Donington to September Beach: 30 minutes, 1 km — Parks SA’s short family coastal through heath.

Fisherman Point to Cape Donington: 4.9 km / ~1 hr 45 min, granite and Boston Bay views. Donington Cottage (built around 1899 by William Argent) sits overlooking Spalding Cove on that corridor. Pick one of these, not all three.

September Beach camping

September Beach campground is a short walk from the beach. Parks SA: 12 sites. Sites 1–7 and 10–12 book on parks.sa.gov.au. Toilets, non-potable water, picnic facilities, fire pits — seasonal fire rules still apply. Wood collection is banned.

Sites 8 and 9 are named on the official page as Kata and Belle glamping (tent set-up, private ensuite). That is a commercial product, not the Parks SA camping tariff. We are not affiliated. Book camping before you arrive.

Donington Cottage — unofficial pointer

Parks SA names Donington Cottage (sleeps six, two bedrooms, kitchen, bathroom, outdoor toilet, electric BBQ, two-night minimum). Fees tab snapshot 13 Sep 2026: $114 per night — VERIFY live.

Bookings through Kata and Belle (kataandbelle.com.au / 0420 986 326 on the official park page). That is an official-page pointer, not an affiliate. Park camping stays on Parks SA bookings.

Seals, edges, bees

Watch sea-lions and fur-seals from shore and lookouts. Stay the legal distances in the marine-mammal regulations. This is not a swim-with product.

Cliffs undercut and crumbling. Heat. Feral bees at water. No drinking water supplied. Fill in Port Lincoln.

  • Stay legal distances from marine mammals — lookouts, not a scramble onto the island.

FAQ — Donington

Tap a question to expand the answer.

Can I drive a sedan to September Beach?

Parks SA lists sealed-road access for September Beach and several nearby campgrounds. Always verify live track notes. Remote 4WD campgrounds (Carcase Rock, MacLaren Point) are a different class.

Is Donington Cottage official park camping?

No. It is restored cottage accommodation named on the Parks SA park page and booked through Kata and Belle. Official campgrounds book on parks.sa.gov.au. We do not take commission on either.

How long is the Donington Loop?

Parks SA: 6.2 km, about 2 hours, moderate. Starts at the lighthouse (checkpoint 15) or September Beach (checkpoint 16). The 1 km Cape Donington–September Beach link is the short family option.

Can I swim with the sea-lions?

Not as a park product from this cape. Haul-outs are on Donington Island. Watch from shore and stay the legal distances. Licensed wildlife tours from Port Lincoln are a different booking — read inclusions; they are not Parks SA.
