Proper Bay, Pillie Lake & park entrance

The front door: Proper Bay Road main entrance, Pillie Lake, Sleaford Mere links and inland mallee. Where sedan days start — and where dune parties must return while the Sleaford gate is blocked.

  • Best for: Arriving, paying/proving vehicle entry, Pillie Lake walks, Investigator sections via Sleaford Mere
  • Time: Transit plus optional 2–4 hour inland walks; not the whole park
  • Entry is 13 km south-west of Port Lincoln via Proper Bay Road. Parks SA: ~8 hours / ~665–680 km from Adelaide. Wallaroo–Cowell ferry can shorten the trip when operating — VERIFY.

The only reliable door right now

Pay vehicle entry before you arrive. Carry proof. The main entrance is the sedan and 2WD door to Stamford, September, Surfleet and Taylor’s Landing. It is also the required in/out while Parks SA lists the western Sleaford dune-track entrance as impassable.

Checkpoint 1 is the park entrance. Checkpoint 2 is Pillie Lake. Those numbers are orientation on the official bushwalking brochure, not a treasure hunt.

If you are a 4WD dune party, you still come through this door until the live alert says otherwise. Do not test the west gate because a forum said “it looked open last year”.

Inland walks from the door

Park entrance to Pillie Lake: 7.8 km / ~2.5 hours. Secluded trail, Proper Bay views, spring wildflowers. Starts at the entrance (checkpoint 1) or northern Pillie Lake (checkpoint 2).

Pillie Lake to Stamford Hill: 11.6 km / ~4 hours through inland mallee and low coastal limestone cliffs.

Investigator Trail — Pillie to main entrance via Sleaford Mere: 26.3 km / 9 hours. Massive dunes, wind-swept cliffs, unique Sleaford Mere. Checkpoints 2, 3, 21–24, 1. Water not guaranteed. Third-party full-circuit 80–90 km figures are not Parks SA.

Adelaide is not a day trip

Parks SA: about 8 hours and 680 km from Adelaide (park page also lists ~664.75 km). That is a planning overnight in Port Lincoln, not a CBD afternoon.

The Wallaroo–Cowell ferry can shorten the trip when operating — VERIFY. Plan B is sleep in Port Lincoln and walk Stamford Hill the next morning. See the Adelaide day-trip article on this site.

Last town, water, fire

Port Lincoln is the last full town for fuel, groceries, pharmacy and medical. There is no drinking water in the park. Fill here.

Download the official map in Avenza and Emergency+ on town Wi-Fi. Coverage is patchy, especially low-lying. 000 needs reception.

Park closed Catastrophic Fire Danger; may close Extreme. Check CFS before you leave town. Wood collection is banned.

What this door is not

It is not Memory Cove (key, 15 vehicles, $50 deposit). It is not the western Sleaford 4WD exit. It is not a reason to skip paying vehicle entry.

Use it, then pick one park face: Stamford granite, Donington peninsula, booked Memory Cove, or (if 4WD and the alert allows) Wanna dunes. Not all four.

FAQ — Entrance / Pillie

Tap a question to expand the answer.

How far from Adelaide?

Parks SA: about 8 hours and roughly 665–680 km. Optional shorter route via the Wallaroo–Cowell ferry when it is operating. Not a same-day return if you want any walk left in the legs.

Do park passes cover camping?

No. 2-month and 12-month multi-park vehicle-entry passes include Lincoln National Park (including Memory Cove) for vehicle entry. Camping is not included. Book camping separately.

Can I leave via Sleaford?

Not while Parks SA lists the western (Sleaford) entrance/exit of the Sleaford–Wanna 4WD track as blocked by a mobile sand dune (still showing 13 Sep 2026; alert last updated 10 March 2026). Use the main entrance. VERIFY live.

Is Pillie Lake a swim?

Treat it as an inland walk and bird habitat, not a swimming-hole itinerary. Carry water. Confirm the brochure and live conditions.
