Sleaford–Wanna dunes

Southern Ocean side: wind-sculpted sand, limestone cliffs, red-marker 4WD track, whale lookouts May–October. Not a sedan afternoon from Stamford Hill.

  • Best for: High-clearance 4WD parties, whale lookouts (Wanna / Lone Pine), experienced dune walking
  • Time: Full day or overnight camp; not a Stamford Hill add-on
  • Parks SA (checked 13 Sep 2026): western (Sleaford) entrance/exit of the Sleaford–Wanna 4WD track is blocked by a mobile sand dune and impassable. Use the main park entrance (Proper Bay Road) to enter and exit. VERIFY live.

A different park face

The southern side of Lincoln National Park is Southern Ocean, not Boston Bay granite. Parks SA describes massive wind-sculpted dunes and pounding surf. Ranger tips include the Sleaford–Wanna dune system and whale watching from Wanna and Lone Pine lookouts between May and October.

This is 4WD country. Follow red marker posts. Standard road rules apply. Do not drive off designated tracks. Getting bogged is common — Parks SA says so in plain language.

If you only have a sedan and a first Port Lincoln overnight, this is the wrong corner. Use Stamford Hill.

Western Sleaford entrance (VERIFY live)

Official park-page banner re-checked 13 Sep 2026 (dedicated alert last updated 10 March 2026 and still showing): a mobile sand dune has blocked the western (Sleaford) entrance/exit of the Sleaford–Wanna 4WD track and it is impassable. Use the main Proper Bay Road entrance to enter and exit.

Do not treat a 4WD blog, an old GPX file, or last year’s trip notes as current. If the live alert is gone tomorrow, still verify on parks.sa.gov.au before you commit to a west-gate plan.

Lookouts vs the 14 km hike

Wanna and Lone Pine lookouts are the accessible whale-watching pins May–October. Southern right whales are possible, not guaranteed. Stay legal distances. Lookouts, not a scramble down crumbling limestone.

Wanna Dunes to Sleaford Mere is a hard hike: 14.3 km, about 5 hours. Low mallee to a vantage, then exposed Southern Ocean beaches and limestone cliffs. Brian Clarke Hut at checkpoint 23 is a bushwalker shelter, not a booked cabin. Start from the car park just south of checkpoint 22.

Sand, tides, recovery

Deflate for sand. Carry a shovel and a compressor. Reinflate before sealed roads. Check tide times before beach sections. Stay on designated tracks — off-track driving damages habitat and is not a shortcut.

Beach fishing at Millers Hole and Salmon Hole is 4WD-only. Thorny Passage Marine Park sanctuary rules apply on the south coast: Sleaford Bay sanctuary (Wreck Beach to Wanna Lookout) allows shore-based recreational fishing only. Check PIRSA. We do not publish bag limits.

Fire, heat, comms

Park closed on Catastrophic Fire Danger; may close on Extreme. Wood / solid-fuel fires prohibited in fire danger season (usually 1 November–15 April). Bring water. None is supplied.

Coverage is patchy, especially low-lying. 000 needs reception. Emergency+ and Avenza. A PLB is a sensible remote-4WD note, not a park requirement.

FAQ — Wanna dunes

Tap a question to expand the answer.

Can I enter the dunes from Sleaford?

Not via the western entrance as of the 13 Sep 2026 Parks SA banner — blocked and impassable. Use the main Proper Bay Road entrance. Check the live alert the morning you go.

Is the Wanna Dunes walk a casual beach stroll?

No. Parks SA: 14.3 km, about 5 hours, hard hike. Exposed Southern Ocean beaches and limestone cliffs. Brian Clarke Hut is a bushwalker shelter at checkpoint 23, not a booked cabin.

Can I do this in a 2WD?

The Sleaford–Wanna track is a 4WD sand product. Sealed-road Stamford / September / Surfleet / Taylor’s Landing are the sedan days. Do not test the west gate in a hire car because a photo looked “not that sandy”.

When are whales?

Parks SA: southern right whales may be seen off Sleaford Bay May–October. Wanna and Lone Pine are the named lookouts. Possible, not guaranteed. Legal distances apply.
