Why this is the first-day corner
If you slept in Port Lincoln and have one morning, start at the car park at the base of Stamford Hill (near checkpoint 7). Parks SA lists the Stamford Hill Hike as one of the 40 Great Australian Short Walks: 1.6 km return, about 45 minutes, moderate inclines, good surface. The summit is the historic Flinders Monument with views over Boston Bay, Port Lincoln, the park and offshore islands.
Boston Bay is Australia’s largest natural harbour. The granite headlands and Surfleet Cove sit on this sheltered side. The Southern Ocean dune coast is a different vehicle class and a different hazard list. Do not merge them in one rushed afternoon.
A successful first visit is the monument, water still in the bottles, and time left for Stamford Beach or Surfleet — not a key run to Memory Cove because the climb felt short.
Day shape: monument, then one extra
Out-and-back to the monument is the whole product for many groups. Interpretive signs cover natural history. Turn around anytime — the day area is the safe hub, not a ridge with thin bail-outs.
If legs remain: Stamford Hill to Surfleet Cove is the official family coastal (1 hour, 2.7 km) along Stamford Beach past granite headlands, Boston Island in the distance. A short detour from checkpoint 9 to Surfleet Point is listed for extra views. Start from the Stamford car park or Surfleet campground (checkpoint 10).
The Stamford Hill Loop (5.7 km / ~2 hours) continues via an Investigator Trail section past woodcutter ruins near checkpoint 6. Same start. Same heat and cliff awareness. Do not stack the loop and a 4WD dune day.
Access, fees and facilities
Sealed roads cover the main entrance (Proper Bay Road, ~13 km from Port Lincoln), the Stamford day area and Surfleet Cove campground. Pay vehicle entry before you arrive (or hold a valid pass). Toilets and picnic shelters are at the Stamford day-visitor area. Surfleet campground has toilets; campfires are not permitted there.
No drinking water in the park. Surfleet’s non-potable water, where listed, is not a tap plan. Fill in Port Lincoln.
We have not walked this area for this guide. Distances and open/closed status come from Parks SA and the official bushwalking brochure. Confirm the morning you go.
Hazards that actually apply here
Heat on exposed granite and scrub. Cliff edges nearby — stay on the formed track. Moderate fitness for the incline: not technical, not a flat stroll.
Park closed on Catastrophic Fire Danger; may close on Extreme. Check CFS before you leave town. Feral bees around water, especially spring–autumn.
Mobile coverage can be patchy, especially in low-lying coves. 000 needs reception. Emergency+ and an Avenza park map are the planning notes — not a carrier coverage map.
What not to bolt on
Memory Cove needs a booking, a Port Lincoln VIC key, a 15-vehicle cap and usually 4WD. It is a different itinerary. Wanna dunes need a high-clearance vehicle and the live Sleaford-entrance alert.
If this corner is full or the fire rating is junk, reverse to Port Lincoln. Do not invent a second park face because the first hour felt easy.

FAQ — Stamford Hill
Tap a question to expand the answer.
Is Stamford Hill a good first walk?
Yes. Parks SA: 1.6 km return, about 45 minutes, moderate inclines, good surface. Turn around anytime. Pair with Stamford Beach or Surfleet if energy remains. Do not add Memory Cove or the dune track the same morning.
Do I need a walking permit?
No general day-walk permit. You still pay vehicle entry (or hold a valid park pass) and follow park rules. Memory Cove’s 15-vehicle cap is a separate access control, not a Stamford permit.
Is 1.6 km or 2.2 km the distance?
Lock the primary figure to the official-aligned 1.6 km return / ~45 minutes on Parks SA and the bushwalking brochure. Some third-party listings quote ~2.2–2.3 km. VERIFY the signed start and the brochure the morning you go.
Can kids do it?
Many mixed groups use it as the first hour if they carry water and stay on the track. It is a moderate incline, not a pram stroll. The Surfleet coastal 2.7 km is the gentler extra. We have not clocked it with children for this guide.
Where do I sleep?
Port Lincoln is the last full town for fuel, food and medical. Surfleet Cove is the nearby official campground (book Parks SA; no campfires). Do not treat Coffin Bay as a Stamford dawn base if you still need a Memory Cove key the same trip.

- Wanna dunesSouthern Ocean side: wind-sculpted sand, limestone cliffs, red-marker 4WD track, whale lookouts May–October. Not a sedan afternoon from Stamford Hill.
- Memory CoveLocked-gate wilderness bay: white sand, vegetated headlands, 15 vehicles a day. Book vehicle entry and camping, then collect a key from Port Lincoln VIC ($50 cash deposit on the official fees tab — VERIFY). 4WD required at times. Not a Stamford Hill lookout.
- Taylor’s LandingEastern Jussieu Peninsula: boat ramp, allocated campsites, secluded beaches and Investigator Trail junctions toward Pillie and MacLaren Point.
- Entrance / PillieThe front door: Proper Bay Road main entrance, Pillie Lake, Sleaford Mere links and inland mallee. Where sedan days start — and where dune parties must return while the Sleaford gate is blocked.
